Why we're building this.
I have spent twenty years in technology, most of them building things that were, if I'm honest, in the attention business. The deal was always the same: we give you something useful, and in exchange we take a little more of your day than the useful thing required. Everyone in the industry knows this deal. Most of us stopped noticing we were making it.
Then at some point I watched myself check a screen while one of my children was telling me something, and I understood the balance of that trade with complete clarity. Nothing on the screen was worth it. Nothing on the screen has ever been worth it. But the screen doesn't have to be worth it — it only has to be there.
The strange thing is that we already solved this problem once, a century ago, for a very small number of people. It was called a secretary. Not software that helps you process more — a person with judgement, who knew what could wait, who took the call so you didn't have to, and who understood that their job was measured by how rarely they needed you. The most humane piece of productivity technology ever invented, and we never scaled it past the corner office.
So that is the whole company: a secretary for everyone. One number you can text or call. A device with no screen, because the screen was the problem. A brief at the right time, everything else back later rather than never, and interruptions so scarce that each one means something. We measure ourselves by an odd number — how much could wait without making you check.
We're building it in Helsinki, in a culture that treats silence as a form of respect. That upbringing is all over the product, and I've stopped apologizing for it.
